Detectives Mike Ellis and Bruce Weatherly had graduated from Brackenridge High School together.  On May 11, 1944, the detectives answered a call in the 100 block of Nebraska Street where Mack Belton Newton had shot his companion, Sadalia Clark, in the head and arm.  The detectives spotted Newton running down the street.  Newton fired twice, striking the squad car, and wounding Detective Weatherly.  Detective Ellis started chasing Newton on foot.  Newton fled to his daughter's house in 700 block of South Walnut.  As Detective Ellis approached the gate, Newton shot him.  Detective Ellis fell, and as he went to pick up his pistol, Newton shot at him again.  Newton then shot and killed himself.

Detective Ellis was survived by his wife and two children.
