Patrolman Canales was shot and killed with a shotgun used by two robbers he stopped on Frio City Road. As he fell, he shot his gun at the fleeing car, which caused it to strike an expressway support. The suspects were apprehended.

Patrolman Canales was survived by his wife, Maria, and three sons, Tony, David and Joseph.
