Firefighters were conducting a training exercise with hand held portable extinguishers in the parking lot next to the fire station. Firefighter Hardie was operating a Soda and Acid type extinguisher when it exploded causing fatal injury to him.  Firefighter Hardie’s death led to legislation that banned the use of Soda and Acid type extinguishers. 

Firefighter Steven Hardie was survived by his wife Janet.
